FOCUS TURKEY

The 5 short films of the Focus Turkey programme will be screened on Saturday 6 July at the Giardino Pubblico Muzio de Tommasini in Trieste, after the award ceremony, which starts at 21.00.

Reflecting on the past five years of short films in Turkey, I curated a selection that showcases truly dynamic female protagonists. This unintentional preference underscores the profound impact of strong women in Turkish storytelling. As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Turkish Republic, it is clear that the predominant, self-transforming narratives within this society consistently feature resilient and influential women. This collection not only highlights the talent of Turkish filmmakers but also honors the enduring presence and importance of female voices in shaping the cultural landscape.

Turkey’s immense and highly varied ‘short’ film catalogue covers and expresses the country’s cultural richness, historical importance and extensive social and geographical diversity, offering glimpses of life and information often less well known to Western audiences, since tradition and modernity are constantly intertwined in this vast country, not without generating impassioned political and cultural contrasts. For this reason, a focus on recent works by Turkish filmmakers seems to us not only interesting, but also necessary.
