Damiano and Fabio D’Innocenzo are filmmakers whose cinema originated and developed from evocative realism expressed in depth, from analysis of the meanders of souls in search of real life or escaping from it, from observation of rich and complex family dynamics often tending towards the tragic, and from dramatic affinities in male friendships. Their impactful and acute narration of our natural violence, which in love generates classic implications, derives from the attitude cultivated in early and selected readings, based on twinned film themes yet with personal detours, by Fabio and by Damiano in rotation. Their directing strength also lies in the relationships with very good and supportive actors, in a sphere that would appear to be confined to the contemporary Rome environment yet which instead has universal echoes, as demonstrated by their cultural (including musical) background. We believe that these are the expressive-dramaturgical cardinal points of their stories that feature suburban-residential contexts but also psychological marginality into which the feelings of the characters they depict often fall. Their filmmaking boasts the calibrated contribution of choices fully shared by the technical and artistic team, made up of performers who are always ad hoc, as aware as their characters are ultimately lost in daily whirlpools of affection, duties, choices, destinies. It’s an arduous yet flowing mechanism of storytelling inherent in their creativity with meticulously detailed human involvement: from the dazzling debut of La terra dell’abbastanza (Nastro d’Argento Opera Prima) to the impressive Favolacce (four Nastri d’Argento, one David di Donatello, Silver Bear for the screenplay at the Berlinale), to the self-inflicted incarceration-void of America latina (Nastro d’Argento for the script), up to the apparently serial yet totally cinematographic narration of Dostoevskij (Berlinale 2024). Their work as writers collaborating with Matteo Garrone and other like-minded directors means that the Present is truly framed by their mental as much as visceral vision as creators of words, stories, sequences that are extremely meaningful, sometimes profoundly disruptive.

Damiano and Fabio D’Innocenzo were born in Rome on 14 July 1988. Completely self-taught, they made their first feature film La terra dell’abbastanza, presented at the Berlin Film Festival in the Panorama section. They subsequently collaborated on the screenplay for Dogman (2018, Matteo Garrone), published a book of poems (Mia madre è un’arma, La Nave di Teseo) and one of photographs (Farmacia Notturna, Contrasto). With their second feature film, Favolacce, presented in competition at the Berlin Film Festival, they won the Silver Bear for best screenplay, while the subsequent America latina was in competition at the 78th Venice International Film Festival.
Dostoevskij, their first TV series – of which they are creators, screenwriters and directors, is presented at the 74th Berlin Film Festival and can soon be seen in cinemas. In 2024, they directed their first music video for Kanye West’s track Talking/Once Again.
