A luminously ethereal figure and eyes that reflect an empathetic humanity; an athletic and sunny physical presence, due also to involvement in dance, theatre and music, and alook/voice of immediate expressiveness. She is already mindful in measuring the light and shade in her characters, whether in costume or contemporary. The variegated interpretative perspective of femininity in Carlotta Gamba, 27 years old from Turin, who moved to Rome at an early age to study acting, is indeed wide-ranging.
She claims to be shy, and this may be true, but when she gets in tune with stories, directors, sets and interlocutors, her shyness explodes into lively reasoning and introspection devoid of emphasis or banality. In short, Gamba is already an important actress thanks to her fascinating flexibility and a vibrant photogenic quality.
Her career: she made her debut in the D’Innocenzo twins’ America latina as the daughter of dentist Elio Germano, who has a picture-perfect career, house and family, yet his basement is an evil and destructive place. For Carlotta this was her first revealing, formative experience. A totally different director then guided her to inspire the supremely poetic torments of Dante Alighieri when she embodied the idealised Beatrice Portinari in Pupi Avati’s Dante, a creature ambiguously distant from true Love. After such diverse professional impacts and a significant role in Walter Veltroni’s Quando, she was chosen (and she chose them) by three newcomers to directing. In Marescotti Ruspoli’s Amusia, her strong character, sick with the impossibility of tolerating any type of music, flees from her partner and family with vigorous pain. In Emilia Mazzacurati’s realistically surreal Billy, in which fathers and sons are as if uprooted in contrast to their ages, she gives strength to the protagonist who is undecided about everything. In the surprising Gloria! by Margherita Vicario (Berlinale 2024) the very religious Venice of 1802 awaits the new Pope. She is the magnetic co-star in the choir of orphaned boarding school girls who musically orchestrate a scandalous pre-rock concert for the event. She then returned to her ‘initiating’ directors, the award-winning D’Innocenzo twins, for Sky’s profound film noir series Dostoevskij out in July in cinemas and in the autumn on platforms.
What a remarkable artistic-professional start Carlotta Gamba is experiencing. How could we not give her a prize…
